Carving Malangan Masks for a Generation That Nearly Forgot

The Malangan mask is a heritage both beautiful and fragile. Few still want to learn to carve it, and a BWKS Kriya alumni felt that could not be allowed.

He opened weekend classes at his home, free to anyone willing to be patient with chisel and wood.

"I don't want to be the last," he says. "These masks need new hands."
