As heirs of a school of struggle, the people of Bhawikarsu stay steadfast and never give up, drawing on three core strengths: the will to fight, earnestness, and devotion.
In July 1967, students framed the school motto "Bertaqwa, Belajar, Bekerja, Berjuang" (Devout, Studious, Industrious, Striving). To make it more poetic and deeper in meaning, Mr Rahardjo, an Indonesian-language teacher, recast it into Sanskrit.
From that came the phrase "Bhaktya, Widagdha, Karya, Sudhira", shortened to Bhawikarsu, now both the motto and the set of values that animate the whole school community.
The name of SMA Negeri 3 Malang changed several times as national education policy shifted.
SMA Negeri 3 Malang was born on 8 August 1952, first named SMA B II Negeri Malang, at Jalan Sultan Agung Utara No. 7. Its name changed several times as national education policy shifted.
The school was established on 8 August 1952 from the merger of the B stream of SMA B II and SMA Peralihan. As the naming of Malang's high schools was adjusted, it was also known as SMA III B.
The "SMA Gaya Baru" policy standardised the streams and dropped the A, B, and C letter suffixes. SMA III B formally became SMA Negeri 3 Malang.
Under Ministry decree No. 035/O/1997, the name briefly changed to SMU Negeri 3 Malang, before eventually returning to SMA Negeri 3 Malang.
